About Siliguri


Siliguri is a rapidly developing metropolis in the Indian state of West Bengal. Siliguri is situated in Darjeeling District. It is the largest city the area (north bengal) and 2nd largest city in west bengal and connects the hill station towns of Gangtok, Kalimpong, Kurseong, Mirik and Darjeeling with the rest of india.
INFRASTRUCTURE

Siliguri, also known as tier II City has inherent advantages such as physical connectivity, land availability and cost, urban and social infrastructure and level of private sector interest.

It is also the transit point for air, road and rail traffic to the neighbouring countries of Nepal, Bhutan and Bangladesh. Bagdogra airport, situated about 12 km away is the closest airport. The airport is well connected to most Indian cities including the state capital Calcutta. The town hosts over 500,000 domestic and 15,000 foreign visitors annually. It is the commercial nerve centre of North Bengal.

                   


EDUCATION

Due to the inherent importance of Siliguri as the centrally located and largest town in the Sikkim-Darjeeling region, large number of students flock here for higher education.There are a number of colleges around Siliguri. Siliguri Institute Of Technology, Siliguri College, Siliguri College of Commerce (Night College),Siliguri Mahila Mahavidyalaya (Womens College), Surya Sen College are the more prominent ones.

The Siliguri Institute of Technology, located at Sukna, on the northern suburbs of the city, is the first private Engineering College to come up in the region. And there are more privately aided technical colleges coming up in and around the city. The city also has a polytechnic for diploma engineering education.

Economy in Siliguri
Siliguri is described as the gateway to the North East of India. The strategic location of the city makes it a base for essential supplies to the region. Siliguri has gradually developed as a profitable centre for a variety of businesses. As a central hub, many national companies and organisations have set up their offices here.The Hong Kong market located here is a chief hub for buying low cost Chinese goods and illegal imported goods, nearby Seth Srilal Market is a prominent place to buy daily use goods, and is very popular among people from nearby areas. 4 "T" s - Tea, Timber, Tourism and Transport are the main businesses of Siliguri. Siliguri is the headquarters of FOCIN (Federation of Chamber of Commerce and Industry of North Bengal).

SILIGURI & INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY

Siliguri is one of the three satellite IT hub and township that the Government is developing. Dust free and cool regions of Siliguri could be utilized for promotion of Electronic and Software Industry. Leading companies have shown interest and some of them have already started operating. Siliguri have been identified as city that can emerge as preferred destinations for software development and outsourcing companies. Siliguri is capable to attract a large number of Indian and international IT firms. Siliguri enjoys an edge over other places since it has an abundance of English-speaking workers. Such candidates suit the job profile of BPOs.

IT DEVLOPMENT IN SILIGURI
Siliguri is fast emerging as an IT hub, the alternative destination to Kolkata for InfoTech companies. Siliguri already have good infrastructure and there modern amenities for people who work in the IT parks. Five major IT companies have started working in Siliguri and more will be heading there soon. State of West Bengal's Government has set up an IT Park - something like a Special Economic Zone (SEZ) where one can get huge tracks of land just set apart for IT industries. Cost of living and hiring is cheaper and there is plenty of potential for infrastructure growth and development in Siliguri.
