About Durgapur

Location of Durgapur

DURGAPUR is located in the district of Burdwan, in the state West Bengal India. It is a well-planned industrial city on the banks of the river Damodar, with a population of about 250,000.
It lies on the main railway line connecting Calcutta and New Delhi, thus being extremely well connected to both of the above cities. It takes about 2.5 hours by express train to reach Calcutta and an overnight journey to reach Delhi. A full fledged domestic airport is coming up near Durgapur. The airport is expected to be operational by 2010.

Educational Scenery In Durgapur

Durgapur is a classy place for school level education. A large number of excellent educational institutions exist in the city. The DSP operated high schools have skilled teachers and decent infrastructure.Situated in one of the posh areas of the city, Mirabai Road, St. Peter's formerly known as Benachity High is the oldest city private school run by the Protestant denominated Church of North India. The school is widely regarded as one of the finest and most progressive.
College level education was once qualitatively inferior and limited for a city like Durgapur. However, engineering colleges like BC Roy Engineering, Durgapur Institute Of Advanced Technology And Management which is better known as DIATM, Bengal Engineering among others have been set up in and around Durgapur which has created a well-oiled educational industry. NIT, Durgapur, previously RE College is a premier institution and pride of the city. The Government College and the Women's College are not highly regarded in the mirror of public perception

Industries in Durgapur

Durgapur has a whole gamut of manufacturing industries. Among them, Durgapur Steel Plant (DSP) and Alloy Steel Plant (ASP) are the 2 biggest and the ones around which the city and the other industries came up. Both operate under the Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL). DSP, with about 30,000 employees, is an integrated steel plant with 4 blast furnaces, producing about 1 million tonnes annually of pig iron and ingots. It is also the only steel plant in India manufacturing railway wheels. ASP with about 7000 employees is an alloy and special steels plant.

Places of interest in and around Durgapur

Being an industrial city, Durgapur as such, has very little to offer to the casual tourist. The main tourist attraction is the Durgapur Barrage over the Damodar. It is most beautiful during the monsoons, when the river is swollen. The gardens around it are a good place to picnic. The Kumarmangalam Park in the Steel township with its artificial lakes and small hills is another attraction for picnickers and joggers. There is very little else you can see in Durgapur.

IT DEVLOPMENT IN DURGAPUR:

Durgapur is fast emerging as an IT hub, the alternative destination to Kolkata for InfoTech companies. Durgapur already have good infrastructure and there modern amenities for people who work in the IT park. Five major IT companiesare working in Durgapur and more will be heading there soon. Durgapur is one among the five satellites IT hubs. Other four are – Haldia, Kharagpur, Kalyani & Siliguri.Durgapur have been identified as city that can emerge as preferred destinations for software development and outsourcing companies. Once required infrastructure is developed this small towns could attract a large number of Indian and international IT firms.
